Questions about lcd televisions?

  • - WHEN IT SAYS CONTRAST 10,000:1 OR 15,000:1 OR 100,000:1 WHAT DOES THIS MEAN ? DOES IT MEAN THE HIGHER TO 1 IS BETTER OR LOWER??? AND WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCES??

    - WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 120HZ AND 3X HDMI??

    - WHATS DIFF BETWEEN LED AND LCD WHATS BETTER?

  • Contrast is a measure of the difference between maximum white and minimum black that the screen can show, and is given as the ratio bright/dark intensity. It is useful to compare sets, since all manufactures will test their sets under conditions that give the biggest number. So in general, the higher number is better, but unless the difference is more than about 20%, it isn't meaningful. High numbers such as the ones you gave are "dynamic" contrast, in which a full screen white is measured against a full screen black. This indicates how good a "fade to black" will look, and give some indication of the quality of dark scenes, A much more realistic spec is "native" contrast, in which the bright and dark areas are in the same picture. Those numbers are much less, but more important. If you can get that spec, 5,000:1 or more is quite good. Again, small differences are unimportant.

Standard frame rate (refresh rate) on a TV is 60 Hz. Some sets double that by interpolating extra frames between the 60 Hz frames. The reason is to give a smoother appearance to moving objects. It often works quite well, but sometimes causes problems. The interpolation can be turned off. Because the screen in a 120 Hz set has to respond faster, this also helps reduce the blurring of motion which is a problem with LCD sets.

I think you mean HDMI 1.3 which allows higher bitrates and supports 1080p signals. Almost everything has that nowadays, so don't worry about it. If referring to the inputs and outputs of the set, nX means the number (n) available for each input or output specified.

LED is the illumination method, not the display method. LCDs use fluorescent tubes for backlight. Some newer sets use arrays of LEDs instead. Some say that the color from LED-illuminated sets is better. They certainly use less energy. Some LED sets use "local dimming" of dark areas of the picture to improve the contrast. Those are the most expensive sets.

Another type of LED set is OLED (Organic LED), which is supposed to have a superior picture. There is only one set like that sold now, and it has a small screen and is very expensive.

  • Okay...i will answer in three parts....
    1. The higher the contrast ratio is, the better the picture will be. By having a higher contrast ratio, the picture has much sharper difference between its colors and will be a much more defined picture.

    2. All 3X HDMI means is that the television has 3 HDMI inputs, which will become very important as all entertainment systems (gaming systems, DVD Players, Cable Boxes, etc) switch to HDMI outputs only, which is a single cord for high-definition audio and video...The more HDMI inputs, the better. And the MHZ ratings of the television is not really that important.

    3. okay LED stands for "Light-emitting diode". These television's are fast becoming obselete, don't buy them. LCD stands for "Liquid Crystal Display". Buy this type of television.
